What is a Slow Feeder Dog Bowl?

Slow Feeder Dog Bowls are designed to help your Doxie eat slower by making them work a little harder for their food.

Eating too much dog food too fast can increase chances of obesity, digestive issues, and a terrible disease called Bloat.

Why Use a Slow Feeder Bowl?

Some dogs eat their dog food so fast that they choke or even vomit right after eating.

Slow Feeder Dog Bowls not only help promote better digestion, but they also add in a fun challenge to mentally stimulate your dog when they eat.

My Dachshund Eats Too Fast!

My mini Dachshund, Eko, is an extremely fast eater. So much so that he swallows his dog food whole and then gets sick immediately after (with a regular dog food bowl).

I noticed he was a speedy eater when he was a young puppy, which started me on a journey to find the best slow feeder dog bowls.

I began with this Stainless Steel Slow Feeder Dog Bowl for my Dachshund, Eko.

It was a great option for him while he was a pup and still is a nice option for his sister, Gretta.

As Eko grew, his speed-eating pace increased, so I continued to search for other slow feeder dog bowls to help him slow down.  Luckily, I found a few great options listed below.

Slow Feeder Bonus: Working through the bowl to find their food allows your doxie to use their problem-solving skills.  This reduces boredom and separation anxiety issues.

Dachshund Parents: Don’t allow your doxie to graze all day long, it isn’t healthy! It is recommended to only put down the dog food about 20-30 minutes each time they have a meal.  Learn more dog nutrition tips from the ASPCA.

What to Look for in a Slow Feeder Dog Bowl

How do you select a good dog food bowl? Here are the things I look for:

  • What material is it made out of?
  • Is it BPA Free?

  • Non-slip base
  • Dishwasher safe

  • Will it stop the dog from eating too fast?

Safe Dog Bowl Materials

Dog food bowls made from quality food-safe stainless steel, silicone, glass, BPA free plastic, and non-toxic ceramic are considered the safest materials for dog food bowls.

  • Stainless Steel:

Stainless steel is a good choice for dog food bowls because it’s durable, non-porous, it reduces the risk of bacteria growth, and it doesn’t leach harmful chemicals into your pup’s food.

  • Silicone:

Silicone is a safe choice for a slow feeder bowl and is slip resistant too.  The downside is if you have a dog that loves to chew, it can easily be chewed up – so store these bowls up high.

  • Glass:

Glass bowls are non-porous, easy to clean, and don’t leach chemicals into your dog’s food. However, they can crack, chip, and break.

  • Ceramic:

This is a tricky one! Finding a safe ceramic dog food bowl can be like a needle in a haystack.

Though there are some nice looking ceramic slow feeder dog bowls out there, they aren’t considered safe UNLESS they are labeled food certified or food safe and lead free.

  • Plastic:

If your dog food bowl is plastic, always check to make sure it is BPA Free. PVC and Phthalate free are a bonus.

NOTE: If you use a plastic dog bowl, occasionally check the color of your dog’s nose.  If your dog’s nose starts to turn gray or brownish, and it used to be black – the plastic bowl could be the culprit. (see Eko’s nose in the picture below)

Make sure to rotate different types of bowls to keep this from happening or stop using plastic bowls.

Unsafe Dog Bowl Materials

Dog food bowls that don’t list their materials can contain dangerous chemicals that may leach into your dog’s food.

  • Don’t use cheap plastic dog food bowls. They can contain BPA and phthalates.
  • Don’t use aluminum dog food bowls. Aluminum can leach into your dog’s food and cause health issues. If your dog is prone to seizures, this type of bowl can make the seizures worse.

Non-Slip Base

Some dogs love to flip their bowls over causing a big mess all over the floor.  It is helpful to purchase a dog food bowl that is slip-resistant to prevent the bowl from sliding or tipping.

Heavy weighted dog food bowls also work well for dogs who love to tip over their food.

Clean Up

It is super convenient to have a dog food bowl that can be cleaned in the dishwasher.

I recommend getting a couple of high-quality dog food bowls at a time.  One can be used while the others are being washed.

Tip: Wash out your dog’s food and water bowls 1-2 times per week.

Best Slow Feeder Bowls for Dachshunds

I highly recommend using a few different slow feeder dog bowls for Dachshunds because they tend to gulp down their food.

It’s helpful to have a variety of designs on hand to slow them down and challenge their minds during mealtime. Let’s take a look at our top choices.

#1 Choice: Neater Slow Feeder Bowl

This slow feeder dog bowl is made of stainless steel.  It helps reduce dog food inhaling, bloat, and its dishwasher safe.

Unfortunately, the only downside is this bowl doesn’t have a nonslip base on the bottom.  I suggest getting a non-slip mat, tray, or elevated bowl holder to go with it.

Pros: Stainless Steel, Dishwasher Safe.
Cons: No Non-slip Base.

2. Dexas Slow Feeder Dog Bowl

This is one of my new favorite slow feeder bowls for extra speedy eaters!  It is made of silicone, and it has soft spikes to help slow down my fast-eating Dachshund, Eko.  It’s definitely a bigger challenge at mealtime for him, and that’s a good thing.

Note: Eko’s sister Gretta has a harder time with this bowl because she doesn’t have the typical extra-long doxie snout. So, it works best with long-snouted Dachshunds.

Pros: Non-Slip Base, dishwasher safe.
Cons: The silicone spikes are long, only use for long snouted doxies.

3. Coomazy Silicone Slow Feeder Dog

This silicon puzzle bowl has a heavier weight then most silicon bowls, which is nice.  It also has a suction cup on the bottom of the bowl to help keep it in place on the floor.

Pros: Dishwasher Safe, Non-Slip Base.
Cons: None.
