Slow Feeder Dog Bowls help your Dog eat slower, which promotes healthy digestion. Eating too much food too fast can increase chances of obesity, digestive issues, or a terrible disease called Bloat.

As a Dachshund owner, we know that our doxies Love To Eat.  They love their food so much that they often engorge themselves until they are so full that they get a stomach ache or have horrible room-clearing gas.  I recommend using Slow Feeder Dog Bowls to help your dachshund eat slower and promote healthy digestion.

After researching several dog food bowls, I have found the Best Slow Feeder Dog Bowls for Dachshunds.  I decided to buy this Slow Feeder Dog Bowl for my miniature dachshund, Eko.  The price is very reasonable on Amazon and it does a great job at slowing him down when he eats his meals.

Why Use a Slow Feeder Bowl?

Some dogs eat their dog food so fast that they choke or even vomit right after eating.  Slow Feeder Dog Bowls not only help promote better digestion, they also add in a fun challenge to mentally stimulate your dog when they eat.  Working through the bowl to find the food allows your dog to use their problem-solving skills.  This reduces boredom and separation anxiety issues.  Need some more ideas to keep your dog busy, check out our recommended Boredom Buster Dachshund Toys.

Tip: It isn’t healthy to allow your dog to graze all day long, so it is recommended to only put down the dog food about 20-30 minutes each time they have a meal.  Learn some more dog nutrition tips from the ASPCA.

What to Look for in a Dog Food Bowl:

How do you select a good dog food bowl? Here are the things I look for:

  • What material is it made out of (BPA Free)?
  • Non-slip base (less mess)
  • Dishwasher safe (easy to clean)
  • Will it stop the dog from eating too fast?

Materials:

Avoid purchasing cheap dog food bowls.  They contain dangerous chemicals that can leach into your dog’s food. Dog Food Bowls made from quality food-safe, non-toxic ceramic, glass, silicone, or stainless steel are considered the Safest Materials for dog food bowls.  Bowls made from these materials are non-porous, so your dog’s food won’t be affected.

Now, as far as slow feeder bowls go, unfortunately there aren’t that many options made from the safest materials.  I did find one slow feeder dog bowl made from Stainless Steel, which is my number one choice below.  The other choices are made from silicone or BPA Free plastic.

  • Ceramic:

Make sure the Ceramic Bowl is certified for food use and is coated with a lead-free glaze.  Finding a safe ceramic dog food bowl can be like a needle in a haystack.  I couldn’t find a Safe ceramic slow feeder bowl on Amazon, only regular ceramic dog food bowls.

  • Silicone:

Silicone is usually a safe choice for a dog bowl and is slip resistant too.  The down side is if you have a dog that loves to chew, it can easily be chewed up.

  • Aluminum:

Avoid using Aluminum-Based Dog Food Bowls if your dog is prone to Seizures.  This type of bowl can make the seizures worse.

  • Plastic:

If your dog food bowl is plastic-based, always check to make sure it is at least BPA Free.  PVC, & Phthalate Free are a bonus.

NOTE: If you use a plastic dog bowl, occasionally check the color of your dog’s nose.  If your dog’s nose starts to turn gray or brownish, and it used to be black.. the plastic could be the culprit.  Make sure to rotate different types of bowls to keep this from happening or stop using plastic bowls.

See Eko’s Nose in the picture below?  It has a brownish streak on it.  I believe this is from the plastic dog food bowl.  So, I now switch between his plastic and his stainless steel slow feeder bowls to get his black colored nose back to normal.

Non-Slip Base:

Some dogs love to flip their bowls over causing a big mess all over the floor.  It is helpful to purchase a dog food bowl that is slip-resistant to prevent the bowl from sliding or tipping.  Heavy Weighted dog food bowls also work well for dogs who love to tip over their food.

Clean Up:

It is super convenient to have a dog food bowl that can be placed in the dishwasher.  I recommend getting a couple of high-quality dog food bowls at a time.  One can be used while the other is being washed.

Tip: Wash out your dog’s food and water bowls 1-2 times per week.
