Top Dachshund Coats
Finding your Dachshund a warm coat that actually fits can be like looking for a needle in a haystack. Doxies are extra long and extra short, so it can be tough to find Dachshund coats that can accommodate their unique build.
I did plenty of online research to find the best coats for dachshunds and finally found the Django puffer coat. It’s definitely my new favorite to keep my Dachshunds warm this winter.

Do Dachshunds Get Cold Easily?
Do Dachshunds Need Coats in the Winter?
Yes, Dachshunds need a coat. Dachshunds have less body insulation than other dog breeds. Dachshunds need extra warmth when it’s chilly outside.
As a Dachshund owner, I know that they really don’t like being wet or cold. They much prefer being warm and cozy – don’t we all!
Dachshund Clothing Features To Look For:
Whether it’s a cozy Dachshund sweater or warm winter coat you are looking for, there are many important factors to consider when choosing Dachshund clothes.
Not only should the coat or sweater cover the extra length of your doxie, but it also should have reflective material to be more visible, easy to put on your long dog, and machine washable.
Easy On / Off: Dachshund coats need to be easy to put on and to take off. Dachshunds don’t mess around, if they don’t want it on, they will put up a fight.
Comfort: Will the Dachshund keep the coat on and are they willing to walk in it? If your doxie doesn’t prefer a tight fitted sweater, try a relaxed puffer coat instead. Choose one made with soft material so your pup won’t feel itchy.
Durability: Pick a coat that is going to be able to withstand different terrain without falling apart.
Clean up: Go with machine washable dog clothes. Dachshunds are lower to the ground, so they do get messy. Also, choose a dog coat that has a big enough opening on the bottom for potty access.
Visibility: Choose a dog coat that is brightly colored or has reflective material to be more visible to other walkers and drivers.

Sweaters that have rear leg holes to hold down the rear top portion of the coat/sweater would be best for the long low dogs and there should be different versions for the males and females regards how much cover for the bottom.
Hi There! I was able to find a fleece pajama jumpsuit on Amazon that could fit your Dachshund. Per the reviews, there are some doxies that wear them. I hope this helps. Take care and thanks for your comment.
Can you find any winter coats that have the “D” rings on the top of the jacket so you wouldn’t have to have a harness underneath. The ones with only the opening for the collar are sometimes too far down on the back resulting in choking effect. Have only found one made by Kuoser but the description said it was not for Doxies. Just would like to avoid a second harness for my boy and that idea would solve both.
Thank you,
Hi There, the Blizzard Dachshund Parka from Noodle and Friends (listed above) has the D-Ring attached to the coat and alternatively has the hole for the harness underneath as an option. (see the picture of the cute blonde colored doxie in the red coat). Thank for writing in, keep your doxie warm this season and take care.
Hi, I have a female mini Dachshund with very little legs. Finding it hard to get jackets for her as her legs come out all the time. Can you recommend a jacket for her. She has very little hair on the under belly and feels the cold. Live in Melbourne
Many thanks Lesley
Hi there, I recently found some adorable Dachshund sweaters online on whatsupdox.com. This looks like it should cover more of your dachshund’s underbelly. I hope this helps, take care. :)
Hi Ava Jaime, I have to agree with Irene in regards the bare under belly with 90% of dog coats. I have a 18mth old female Dachshund that I have had great difficulty finding a coat that is long enough and cover her bare belly. She has destroyed 3 coats so far which were too tight fitting because of her length and where the legs were located. I would like to hear of any coats that will fit her length and cover her belly. Cheers
Hi Michele, Thanks for your comment. So far, the best one I can recommend is the DJANGO Puffer Dog (created by fellow dachshund parents), which covers a good amount of dachshund back length, under chest and mid belly area. I will definitely keep searching for more coats that cover the belly for the females doxies though.
Here is another dachshund fleece sweater you could try, this may help cover more dachshund tummy. What’s Up Dox Fleece Dachshund Sweater.
Hi,
Thank you for all of the information.
We live in Madison, WI, (northern midwest) cold and often snowy winters.
I suggest that you include more coats/sweaters which cover the mostly fur-less underside. This is of course easier for a female dog.

I am sorry for the loss of your dearest dog, Reno. 2.5 years ago our 18 yr old died, we now have a 2 yr old.
Hi Irene, Thank you, I do appreciate your kind words. Wow, 18 years old, sorry for your loss as well. I bet your 2 year old doxie keeps you busy, haha. Take care. :)
Hello Irene, Thank you for the suggestion. These dachshund coats cover the upper part of the dachshund’s chest underneath and have an opening around the lower belly for a mess-free potty time.
I agree though, covering more of the doxie’s lower belly would be warmer for them…it’s a tough one for these pups who are lower to the ground and need warmth and an opening for going potty.
Some dog coats that cover too much of the under belly often get peed on or drag on the ground and get muddy. But, I will continue to look for more coats that would help out the female doxie’s.
