Top Dachshund Coats
Finding your Dachshund a warm coat that actually fits can be like looking for a needle in a haystack. Doxies are extra long and extra short, so it can be tough to find Dachshund coats that can accommodate their unique build.
After extensive online research and thorough testing with my own doxies, I am thrilled to present the Top Dachshund Coats.

Do Dachshunds Get Cold Easily?
Do Dachshunds Need Coats in the Winter?
Yes, Dachshunds need a coat. Dachshunds have less body insulation than other dog breeds. Dachshunds need extra warmth when it’s chilly outside.
As a Dachshund owner, I know that they really don’t like being wet or cold. They much prefer being warm and cozy – don’t we all!
Dachshund Clothing Features To Look For:
Whether it’s a cozy Dachshund sweater or warm winter coat you are looking for, there are many important factors to consider when choosing Dachshund clothes.
Not only should the coat or sweater cover the extra length of your doxie, but it also should have reflective material to be more visible, easy to put on your long dog, and machine washable.

#1 Choice: The DJANGO puffer coat is weather-resistant and has full coverage of your Dachshund’s extra long back. This Dachshund coat is legit for those chilly winter walks! It’s my all-time favorite, best Dachshund coat for winter and it lasts for years.
My piebald mini Dachshund, Eko (wearing the red puffer coat above) loves wearing this coat because he hates going out to potty in the freezing cold. My Dachshund puppy, Gretta (wearing the purple puffer coat) enjoys romping in the woods and hunting squirrels in this coat.
The DJANGO puffer coat is designed with your Dachshund’s mobility in mind. It has extra large arm holes for maximum flexibility and includes a leash portal in the back for easy access.

This cozy, quilted Dachshund coat is extra-long and literally covers your doxie’s entire back, even over the base of their tail.
It is waterproof, windproof, and works great as a warm raincoat or winter coat. Features include a warm fleece lining and reflective piping. This Dachshund coat is machine washable, yay!
Note: We did manually add a lead slot for Gretta’s harness loops to come through, as it only had one for a collar.
This Dachshund jacket is waterproof on the outside, has warm fleece lining on the inside and an attached fleece snood (or dog hood) to keep your doxie’s floppy ears warm on a windy day.
It does cover my tweenie, Eko’s, extra-long back which is nice in the chilly winter weather.
Note 1: This Dachshund winter coat does have to go over your doxie’s head to put it on. So, if that’s a no go for your pup, stick with the Django puffer coat or quilted Dachshund coat style instead.
Note 2: The chest straps that secure the jacket need to be velcroed loose enough to allow your doxie free movement in the front. I use the back two straps instead of all three to allow a little more doxie leg room.
Note 3: We manually added a harness lead slot for Eko’s harness loops to come through, because it only had one for a collar.

My Dachshund, Eko, is wearing a very stylish, grey and red tartan coat from Dachshund Couture (pictured above). This came all the way from Munich, Germany! A Dachshund wearing a coat from Germany – how awesome is that?
This handmade Dachshund coat is a stylish and sleek design. It is easy to put on and take off with two velcro attachments in the front of the chest and under the chest. This sweater is lightweight and covers my Dachshund’s entire back all the way down to the base of his tail.

Dachshund Fleece Sweater
This fleece Dachshund sweater is from whatsupdox.com. It is made from velvety soft Cirrus™ fleece that provides the ultimate in comfort for those hard to fit weenie dog shapes. There are no closures or sleeves to trip over and it is made in the USA.
If you live in an area where it gets pretty chilly, I recommend getting your doxie a couple coats or sweaters to keep them warm and dry when going outside.

Hi, I have a female mini Dachshund with very little legs. Finding it hard to get jackets for her as her legs come out all the time. Can you recommend a jacket for her. She has very little hair on the under belly and feels the cold. Live in Melbourne
Many thanks Lesley
Hi there, I recently found some adorable Dachshund sweaters online on whatsupdox.com. This looks like it should cover more of your dachshund’s underbelly. I hope this helps, take care. :)
Hi Ava Jaime, I have to agree with Irene in regards the bare under belly with 90% of dog coats. I have a 18mth old female Dachshund that I have had great difficulty finding a coat that is long enough and cover her bare belly. She has destroyed 3 coats so far which were too tight fitting because of her length and where the legs were located. I would like to hear of any coats that will fit her length and cover her belly. Cheers
Hi Michele, Thanks for your comment. So far, the best one I can recommend is the DJANGO Puffer Dog (created by fellow dachshund parents), which covers a good amount of dachshund back length, under chest and mid belly area. I will definitely keep searching for more coats that cover the belly for the females doxies though.
Here is another dachshund fleece sweater you could try, this may help cover more dachshund tummy. What’s Up Dox Fleece Dachshund Sweater.
Hi,
Thank you for all of the information.
We live in Madison, WI, (northern midwest) cold and often snowy winters.
I suggest that you include more coats/sweaters which cover the mostly fur-less underside. This is of course easier for a female dog.

I am sorry for the loss of your dearest dog, Reno. 2.5 years ago our 18 yr old died, we now have a 2 yr old.
Hi Irene, Thank you, I do appreciate your kind words. Wow, 18 years old, sorry for your loss as well. I bet your 2 year old doxie keeps you busy, haha. Take care. :)
Hello Irene, Thank you for the suggestion. These dachshund coats cover the upper part of the dachshund’s chest underneath and have an opening around the lower belly for a mess-free potty time.
I agree though, covering more of the doxie’s lower belly would be warmer for them…it’s a tough one for these pups who are lower to the ground and need warmth and an opening for going potty.
Some dog coats that cover too much of the under belly often get peed on or drag on the ground and get muddy. But, I will continue to look for more coats that would help out the female doxie’s.
