This puppy playpen literally helped me survive puppy potty training!
Using a puppy playpen on a vinyl or tile floor makes for super easy clean-up when your pup has an accident.
I used this playpen for my kids when they were little and now, I use it for my puppy, Eko.
This puppy playpen can also open up to act as a large room divider for those hard-to-gate-off areas in your home.
Reserving a special place for your puppy allows them to have a safe space when it is time to take a nap or even a much-needed ‘time out’ when puppy chewing gets out of control.

Walk Through Dog Gate

In my home, the Carlson Walk Through Pet Gate works perfectly! It has a latched doorway so you don’t have to climb over, and your dog can’t climb over either.
Don’t forget a retractable puppy gate for your stairs! This will help prevent your puppy from climbing up or falling down the steps.

Dachshunds have a very fragile back and are prone to a spinal disease called IVDD. All Dachshunds should avoid high-impact activities including jumping and any activity that will put too much strain on their spine. Consider purchasing a couple of dog ramps for your furniture (couch, bed, etc…) to help prevent injury.

Dog Body Harness
A dog harness is the best choice for Dachshund dogs.
When my husband and I take our Dachshunds for a hike, we have one Dachshund who does just fine with his regular neck collar, but the other one pulls so hard that he coughs and hacks throughout the walk.
Our favorite Dachshund harness is the Puppia Dog Harness.
It is made of cool mesh material and can be cleaned in the washing machine.

On our summer camping trip, we secured our doxies around a nearby tree while we set up our tent. Literally, before the tent was up, one of the Dachshunds was wandering around the campsite – free as a bird. One dog was still on a leash, while the other leash was cut right in half. I never actually caught them doing it, so I wasn’t sure if one dog released the other or that dog released himself, it will always be a fun mystery.

Stronger Leash for Pullers: As your doxie grows, you might notice that their pulling gets stronger too. I’ve found that the Django adventure dog leash is a nice strong leash for daily walkies. If you do a lot of nighttime walks after work like I do, the Embark reflective dog leash is helpful to improve visibility and keep your little long dog secure.

Dachshunds Love to Eat! Unfortunately, some doxies eat their dog food so fast that they choke or even vomit right after eating.

Puppy Shampoo

Use a gentle puppy shampoo that is hypoallergenic and tear-less. Aloe Vera or oatmeal-based puppy shampoos rank higher as far as gentleness but are still effective at getting them clean.
The Earthbath ultra mild puppy shampoo has some really great reviews. Keep in mind, it is a ‘concentrated formula’, so you won’t need a lot to lather and make sure to rinse off your puppy really well.

Don’t use people shampoo on your puppy! I know it is tempting and more convenient, but our people shampoo is formulated for our skin and hair, not a dog’s. It will dry out your Dachshund’s coat and could cause itchy skin conditions.

Hi Alyson, I personally do prefer the puppy playpen over the crate. I use one in our kitchen for daytime and another one up in my master bedroom for bedtime. Many doxie parents like the crate, but my doxies have never acted calm and content in a crate. In fact, my puppy Gretta acted petrified of it, so I just stick with the puppy playpen. When my doxies were little pups, I was able to sit inside the puppy playpen with them, train them, give them their meals and treats and had fun toy playtime as well. This made time in the playpen more comfortable and helped them feel like it was a safe place to calm down and not bark- especially whenever I have to step out of my home.
