My mini dachshund Eko (below) has a big 1st birthday coming up. Before Eko, it had been 14 years since I raised a new puppy. This year, I discovered so many new puppy essentials that I just can’t live without. They all made my life so much easier and I know they will help you out too.

Puppy Potty Training Gear
This puppy playpen literally helped me survive puppy potty training!
Using a puppy playpen on a vinyl or tile floor makes for super easy clean up when your puppy has an accident. I designated an area in the kitchen for my dachshund puppy playpen.
I used this playpen for my kids when they were little and now I use it for little Eko. It is secure and tall enough to keep him from climbing out.
Using a playpen for your puppy is great because it can also open up as a large room divider.
Reserving a special place for your pup allows them to have a ‘safe space’ when it is time to take a nap or even a much needed “time out” when puppy chewing gets out of control.

Walk Through Dog Gate
If you have rooms full of puppy choking hazards, you need some puppy gates to keep them safe.
In my house, the Carlson Walk Through Pet Gate works perfectly! It has a latched doorway so you don’t have to climb over and your dog can’t climb over either.
Similar Products I Recommend: If you need a handful of puppy gates on a budget, these work well too: plastic doorway gates for puppies.
You don’t need to go hog wild and buy 100’s of Puppy Pads. Just get a regular-sized pack to start your puppy’s house training.
Urine Odor Remover
When your puppy has an accident in the house, clean it up fast. Urine Odor lasts a long time. If you don’t clean it up properly, your puppy will continue to mark the same spot. Using a urine odor remover from Amazon or your local pet store can help get rid of that smell.

Dachshund Mobility and Exercise Gear
Dachshunds have a very fragile back and are prone to a spine disease called IVDD. All Dachshunds should avoid high-impact activities including jumping, running at high-speed, and any activity that will put too much strain on their spine.
Consider purchasing a couple of dog ramps for your furniture (couch, bed, etc…) to help prevent injury.
We purchased the Dachramp From Alpha Paw. It is lightweight, packs up flat, and has nice rubber grips to help our doxies join us on the couch.
Similar Products I Recommend: For smaller rooms or apartments, try foam dog stairs.
Dog Body Harness
A Dog Body Harness is a great choice for Dachshunds.
When we take our dachshunds for a hike, we have one dachshund who does just fine with his regular neck collar, but the other one pulls so hard that he is coughing and hacking throughout the walk.
The Puppia Dog Harness is made of mesh material and can be cleaned in the washing machine. It is super easy to put on your dog, so no more wrestling with your doxie to go for a walk.
Eko loves wearing his Puppia Soft Harness (pictured above)… and I love how easy it is to put it on. He is 6 months old in this picture (about 8 lbs), and wears a Medium size, which fits him perfectly.
As Eko grows, I plan to continue to purchase this harness in a bigger size.

I have owned MANY leashes over the years. The best leashes are made with thick, tough material that can withstand a dachshund’s scissor teeth.
On our summer camping trip, we secured our dogs around a nearby tree so they wouldn’t wander off into the woods while we set up the tent. Literally, before the tent was up, one of the dachshunds were free as a bird wandering around the campsite.
One dog was still on a leash, while the other leash was cut in right in half. I never actually caught them doing it, so I wasn’t sure if one dog released the other or that dog released himself, it will always be a fun mystery.
My husband and I love the BAAPET Dog Leash. It is made with thick, reflective, rope-like material and it has a comfort handle. I have 3 of these leashes because I tend to loose them around the house.
Slow Feeder Bowl
Dachshunds Love Their Food! Some dachshunds eat their dog food so fast that they choke or even vomit right after eating.
Slow Feeder Dog Bowls not only help promote better digestion, they also add in a fun challenge to mentally stimulate your doxie when they eat.
My Dachshund, Eko, uses the Neater Pet Brands Slow Feed Bowl. This slow feeder dog bowl gets my vote for number 1 choice. It is made of Stainless Steel (a material trusted by Veterinarians). It helps reduce dog food inhaling, bloat, and is dishwasher safe.
Start with High Quality Puppy Food. Look for a dog food that has quality food ingredients, less fillers, and a price that you can afford.
Do your research and discuss some healthy dog food options with your Veterinarian to see what they recommend. That’s how I found the perfect food for my doxies: Hill’s Science Diet Dry Dog Food (from Petco).

Dachshund Care Essentials
Pick up a nice soft, machine washable bed for your doxie. They love to be warm and cozy for bedtime. The Snoozer Cozy Cave is a very nice choice for dachshunds.
Your Puppy will also need a few hand-me-down blankets. Don’t purchase anything too expensive for a new puppy right away. Everything new for the puppy will get Chewed, De-stuffed, Peed on…you name it.
Dachshund Puppy Shampoo
Use a gentle puppy shampoo that is hypoallergenic and tear-less. Oatmeal-based puppy shampoos rank higher as far as gentleness for puppies, but still effective at getting them clean.
Natural Dog Shampoo from Pet Pleasant is a very nice choice. It contains oatmeal and lavender, and smells so great!
Note: Don’t use people shampoo on your puppy.
I know it is tempting and more convenient, but our people shampoo is formulated for our skin and hair, not a dog’s. It will dry out your dachshund’s coat and could cause itchy skin conditions.
Top Recommended Boredom Buster: The Bob-A-Lot! Keep your pup happy, busy, and rewarded with this cool treat dispensing toy. This toy will help reduce anxiety and provide hours of mental stimulation.
Here is Eko’s Cute YouTube Video playing with his Bob-A-Lot Dog Toy.
Doxies love to chase balls, catch frisbees, and chew squeaker toys. Some just love to completely demolish their toys, so you will need plenty of toys around the house.
Also, make sure to pick up plenty of puppy chew toys. The more chew toys you provide, the less furniture and shoes will be destroyed.
Enjoy Your Puppy!
There you have it. These Awesome Dachshund Puppy Essentials will seriously help you through your journey of raising your new dachshund puppy. Enjoy everyday, they grow up so fast.
